It was Francis Koenig's wish that the first sculptural work installed at Annmarie Garden be a memorial to the people he
greatly admired, oyster tongers. Antonio Tobias Mendez was selected through a national competition to design the memorial.
The artist's intent was to celebrate a people of pride, character, and integrity; to create a feeling for their space;
to symbolize the elements of their existence; and, to invoke a sense of timelessness and enduring quality.

Working on the scene by dawn in all kinds of weather, the waterman is a breed apart.

Facing the chill wind ripping off the bay, cold enough to bring tears to your eyes. Hands so cold you can't hardly tell you're
wearing gloves. Rough, back-breaking work that lets you sleep easy at night knowing you've done an honest day's work.

I'm a tonger. My father was a tonger. There's been tongers in my family as far back as I can remember.
