Aleksandr Pushkin 1799 - 1837
During his all too brief life, Aleksandr Pushkin created a body of literary works of astonishing, life-affirming beauty. Deeply attached to his Russian & African roots, Pushkin's genius was devoted to the values of honor, freedom & individual dignity. He gave his life for them. To this day, Pushkin is the Russian people's pride.
A.S. Pushkin, Translated by GW Professors Jonathan Chaves & Peter Rollberg Exegi Monumentum
In years to come I'll earn my people's adoration
For only gentle feelings my lyre did awake,
For freedom did I praise in time of tribulation
And mercy ask for fallen heroes' sake.

This statue, by Alexander Bourganov & Igor Bourganov was created on the initiative of the American-Russian Cultural Cooperation Foundation on the occasion of the bicentennial of Aleksandr Pushkin's birth.
Stephen Joel Trachtenberg, President the GWU
The Honorable James W. Symington, Chairman
