a Christmas poem for Christine, 1991 What would he look like If he went to heaven? Maybe a little whiter, to reflect the casting - off of all those bits of dark pain he gathered on his rounds he probably wouldn't even remember the creature locked in the garage, the wild face at the small square window, the terror of the growls. Maybe a little smaller, a little younger, just because that's how heaven is. Maybe always sitting calm, face upturned, waiting for God or you. Maybe that's what gandy'd look like if he went to heaven Free, poised, waiting for a voice to call his name. |
