Saint Francis de Sales statue at the Saint Francis de Sales Church on Rhode Island Ave in Washington, D.C.

Saint Francis de Sales (1567 - 1622) was bishop of Geneva, Switzerland. After studying the humanities, rhetoric, theology, and law in Paris and Padua, he refused to marry the wealthy heiress his father had chosen as his bride, preferring a clerical career. An accomplished preacher, he worked to convert Protestants back to Catholicism. He is known also for his writings on the topic of spiritual direction and spiritual formation. Source: Wikipedia
