Ulysses S. Grant Memorial in Washington, D.C. by Henry Merwin Shrady
Site Home
All Groups -- Central Group -- Cavalry -- Artillery -- Details
1 010700_All_WithCapitol_FmW.jpg The entire Ulysses S. Grant Memorial viewed from the west with the US Capitol building in the background. The cavalry group is on the left and the artillery group on the right. Grant sits astride his favorite horse, Cincinnatus, atop a 22 foot marble pedestal. Four lions lie around Grant. The reflecting pool, installed in 1970, enhances this view of the Capitol but, unfortunately, detracts from the Grant memorial and makes it harder to reach as one comes walking east on the mall.

3 010410_USGAndCav_FmNE.jpg Ulysses S. Grant and his horse, Cincinnatus, on the left. The cavalry group on the right.
4 010710_All_WithWashMon_FmE.jpg The entire US Grant memorial with the Washington monument in the background at sunrise. The Lincoln memorial (mostly the north part) is also visible in the distance. The reflecting pool which was installed in 1970 can be seen on the opposite side of Grant. When the mall was designed the intention was that it would be terminated on its west & east ends by monuments to the wartime president (Lincoln) and his general (Grant).
5 010720_USG_WithWashMon_FmE.jpg Ulysses S. Grant and the lions with the Washington monument in the background. A small part of the Lincoln memorial can be seen behind the base of the Washington monument. When the mall was designed the intention was that it would be terminated on its west & east ends by monuments to the wartime president (Lincoln) and his commanding general (Grant).
6 010810_USG_WithWashMon_FmE.jpg The central group of the Grant Memorial with the Washington monument in the background. The Lincoln memorial (mostly the north side) can be seen near the base of the Washington monument. When the mall was designed the intention was that it would be terminated on its west & east ends by monuments to the wartime president (Lincoln) and his general (Grant).
7 010800_USG_WithCapitol_FmW.jpg Ulysses S. Grant and the lions from across the reflecting pool with the US Capitol building in the background. The base of each lion bears an inscription of the sculptor's name on one side and the name & location of the company where the bronze was cast on the other.
8 011000_All_FmSW.jpg The entire Grant Memorial with a few dozen tourists, two of whom are climbing on the artillery group. Besides the obvious safety issue, climbing these pieces is discouraged because the resulting abrasion wears away some of Shrady's detail. This degradation is already noticable.

15 013400_Inf_FmN.jpg The infantry group installed on the north side of Grant's pedestal. Shrady sketched the two panels in clay but his death left them unfinished. He had reluctantly hired a young assistant, Edmund Amateis, to assist him but was still unable to finish. They were completed by sculptor Sherry Fry and installed in 1924.

This panel differs from the south side in several ways. Here the infantry is charging into battle. Notice that... (1) The soldiers have no bedrolls, (2) The rifles have bayonettes, and (3) The drummer boy is drumming. .

The "Full Size" link at the top of the page is especially helpful in the case of the infantry groups. Check it out! You'll have a better view here than if you were standing in front of it.
16 014000_Inf_FmS.jpg The infantry group on the south side of Grant's pedestal. Shrady sketched the two panels in clay but his death left them unfinished. He had reluctantly hired a young assistant, Edmund Amateis, to assist him but was still unable to finish. They were completed by sculptor Sherry Fry and installed in 1924.

This panel differs from the north side in several ways. Here the infantry is moving on perhaps in preparation for their next battle. Notice that ... (1) The soldiers have bedrolls, (2) Bayonettes have been stowed, and (3) The drummer boy has his drum slung over his back. Here's a close look at the drummer on the other panel.

75 024200_Art_WheelDriverPassion_FmS.jpg Of the 100+ pictures on the site, this is my favorite.

The 'wheel driver' astride the left rear of the four horses harnessed to the caisson. Two of the three artillerymen, seated on the caisson, are visible in the background. According to a plaque on the east side of this group, the man featured here was modeled by USMA cadet Henry J. Weeks of the class of 1908. To his left, the guidon (modeled by Fairfax Ayres) seems to be calling out`to signal a turn as he holds the guidon flag in his left hand. Forward of the wheel driver, the 'lead driver' (modeled by James E. Chaney) struggles to bring the lead horse, front legs pawing the air, under control. Close inspection reveals that part of the gear holding that horse to the team has broken.
