Ulysses S. Grant and the lions with the Washington monument in the background. A small part of the Lincoln memorial can be seen behind the base of the Washington monument. When the mall was designed the intention was that it would be terminated on its west & east ends by monuments to the wartime president (Lincoln) and his commanding general (Grant).
