Some big changes today!
  • What you're looking at right here -- the "What's New" page -- is new today. I'm going to try to recall some of the dozens (hundreds?) of previous updates & put late entries for them. But this one here is really the first.

  • Finally ... a dcMemorals.com Blog! For the longest time it's puzzled me why folks would want to read other people's musings. But today I sat down to write something akin to a newsletter for those folks who've expressed an interest in the sight. After composing that, it occurred to me that I oughta save it for later. And thus was born the dcMemorials.com blog.

  • Pictorial banners on index pages, FAQ, etc. These pages have always been pretty stark. Today I've added a banner of pictures atop each of those pages -- and sometimes along the bottom too as I've done on this page. Much more appealing. I also did away with the blank white background of the General Locations & Metro Stations indexes. I had done this for easier printing, but have finally decided it's just too ugly.

Got to thinking about John's comment in, "Answer Man Catches Up With Doyens of Public Art," about Goode's deflation of the equestrian myth. Decided to create an equestrian page of my own. Quite a task but the result is very nice I think.
  • Thumbnail photos of almost all of the equestrians in D.C. are represented, but there's more ...

  • I thought, "What about the rider's fate? Other websites that tackle the myth say what happened to the guy, but is it accurate? In some cases apparently not! I added a convenient link to a Wikipedia article on each subject so you can decide for yourself.

  • All of Goode's 23 are accounted for on the page & all but three have photographs (Thomas Jackson, George McClellan & John Wesley). I'll not count Pegasus against me since I don't think the statue is there anymore -- he's riderless anyway.

  • I've also got six of the seven equestrians at Gettysburg. I'll get John Sedgewick on my next trip.

Just back from 2 days in Gettysburg. Wow! The Gettysburg page is only scratching the surface, but I tried to get the most interesting items posted. Also a few from Wheeling. Late entry made 23Mar07

Trying to dress things up a bit in advance of the John Kelly column, "Answer Man Catches Up With Doyens of Public Art."
  • Scanned thru pretty much all my photographed attractions & picked out the best photos for the home page. That page is now much longer than before. Maybe too long.

  • I thought Kelly's readers might like ready access to others of his columns that relate to memorials & the like. The "Answer Man" section of the Featured links page is the result.

  • Since John's article was motivated by Goode's new book, I added a link to More Books by John M. Goode on the home page.

An early morning run on "the rims" in Billings netted me a few nice ones of A Range Rider of the Yellowstone. Late entry made 23Mar07
10 - 12 Nov 2006 In Harrisburg for the marathon. Not a great day for pictures, but they'll do. Man was the 11th a miserable day for a long run. Late entry made 23Mar07
July 2006 While vacationing at Bethany Beach, I purchased a RoboPhoto license & that's when the copyright notice started going onto the lower right corner of most photos.Late entry made 23Mar07
20 May 2006 The Delaware marathon is tomorrow. Just wanted to get a photo of the duPont statue that was originally at duPont circle before they installed the current fountain. Late entry made 23Mar07
10 May 2006 This was one of the very first dcMemorials.com outings of all (not counting the HenryMerwinShrady.com obsession of about a year ago. My untouched photos of McPherson bear this date. If memory serves, then on that day I also got Farragut, Webster, Hahnemann & Thomas as well that day. My initial strategy was to do a layout of each attraction akin to how my home page looks today. That was way too time consuming so I later opted for the pretty much straight up & down layout that you see today.Late entry made 23Mar07
19 April 2006 This might just be the very first dcMemorials.com outing. My earliest photos of Burke are dated today. His statue is the nearest one of all to to my office so I'm pretty sure he was my first (of the post-Grant era). Late entry made 23Mar07
18 August 2005 Bergen, Norway -- Seafarer's Memorial & Edvarg Grieg statue. Late entry made 23Mar07
10 August 2005 Oslo, Norway -- Vigeland Park. A handful of pretty lousy photos to show for it. I hadn't really gotten into the "...& beyond" thing yet, but I remember being tempted.Late entry made 23Mar07
16 March 2005 This is the earliest reference I can find to a picture of the Grant Memorial -- so this is when it all began! Late entry made 23Mar07
