Share your thoughts ... memorial-able or not ... marv@dcMemorials.com
March 23, 2007
I thought those of you who've expressed at least a passing interest in
dcMemorials.com,
HenryMerwinShrady.com or
SolbergFarms.com
might like a brief update from time to time on what's going on here. ... So here goes ...
-
I was delighted that the Washington Post's "Answer Man," John Kelly, caught up w/ me in
Billings, Montana last month.
dcMemorials scored some comments at the end of his column,
"Answer Man Catches Up With Doyens of Public Art," a few days later.
A mention in the same breath as
James M. Goode is pretty heady stuff!
- I was motivated by John's note on "...the old myth that which hoof an equestrian statue's horse has in the air denotes what became of the rider..."
to create my
equestrian page.
Deflating the myth is less than half the fun. After you browse a few of the 25-ish
equestrians featured there, take a stroll down Wikipedia lane & read up on the subjects of those statues.
- On the way home from a business trip to
Wheeling, West Virginia,
I made a wonderful stop at
Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
All I can say is, "Wow." At the
Gettysburg page, you'll find over 30 memorials pictured so far. There are around
a thousand photos of well over 100 more to go & that's far from the end of that. Stay tuned.
- On a less effusive note, while stepping backwards for a better angle on the
Mississippi State Memorial,
I twisted my ankle & there went
marathon #7 for the time being. Bummer. Running in
the frigid cold (temperature = -22 F the day I left!) of
Billings & Malta, Montana a few weeks earlier whacked my back and, oh yeah,
the 26.2 miles at
Harrisburg, Pennsylvania
did something to my left hamstring. The running's on the back burner for a few weeks. But
only a few.
- Speaking of that, you might not guess that marathons &
dcMemorials.com are a great fit. Without the stamina that accrues from the former, the latter
would sport a far cry from its current 4,000+ photos (& at least that many in the queue) of more than
500 individual attractions in D.C. & beyond.
- Oh yes, and on the way to Wheeling, I spent a few hours in
Frederick
& Hagerstown, Maryland & Morgantown, West Virginia (no pics posted yet). I'm starting to consider how to re-structure
things to prevent these non-D.C. items from obscuring my primary focus. My ongoing battle with Vista (what a nightmare) has delayed those
efforts still further.
When
John
asked me how this all began, my thoughts returned to the very best memorial I've seen anywhere. With the
Grant Memorial,
Henry Merwin Shrady somehow captured in bronze an astonishing mixture of
heart-wrenching poignancy &
blood-pumping excitement with the
calm resolve of the Civil War's victorious general, our 18th president,
Ulysses S. Grant. You'll be enriched by a visit there.
As you might guess, this all is a bit of a drain on the pocketbook. So, "Thanks!" to those of you who've visited the websites of my sponsors or
who've purchased something in the
bookstore. I try to keep the ads (from which I get a few pennies per click)
to a minimum so as not to detract from the good stuff. You might not have even noticed the few on the home page or those in the upper corners
of the picture pages -- & that's not all bad.
Well, I've penned more than enough for now. I hope you'll keep checking back at the site to see what's new. Your comments & suggestions are
quite welcome.
Best wishes all!
Marv
