dcHotelRoster.com FAQ

How do I get around DC?
. Click here for a copiously detailed answer.
Why are hotels on dcHotelRoster.com listed in this order?
. We put the list in increasing order of distance from the Washington Monument rather than something like "City Center" because this monument is the most recognizable feature of the city & the focal point of the National Mall. If you come to D.C., you're going to want to see the Mall. We also show distances to the main train station (Union Station) & all 3 area airports.
How are drive times & walking times estimated at dcHotelRoster.com?
. Distances & drive times are from Google Maps estimated by Google-magic. Walking times assume a pace of 2.5 miles per hour. The accepted "average walking pace" seems to be about 3 mph, so we scaled that back to account for traffic lights.
How do I get to & around Washington, D.C.?
. The metrorail website will give you the combo of trains (metrorail map) & buses to get "anywhere." Separately, the DC Circulator is a different bus system that's especially easy for tourists to master. Buses (about $1) circulate through 3 different loops. The Mall loop goes 'round the mall. Then there's the east/west Union Station/Georgetown loop & the north/south Convention Center / Waterfront loop. Each loop stops at numerous metrorail stations. If you're stuck somewhere, call 202/637-7000 & they'll tell you which combination of buses & trains to take to get you anywhere.

But first, let's get you into the city.
  • From Reagan National Airport, it's a short cab ride to the city. The metrorail blue & yellow lines are also an option. If your hotel is near the mall, take the blue line toward Largo Town Center to either the Federal Triangle or Smithsonian station. The latter is right the mall. If your destination is closer to a yellow line station, take that train toward Fort Totten.
  • From Dulles Int'l Airport, the Washington Flyer Coach (under $10) will take you to the West Falls Church metrorail station according to a set schedule. Then take the train toward New Carrollton into the city. The Super Shuttle is a shared van service that will take you point to point for a lot less than a cab ride.
  • From Baltimore-Washington Int'l (BWI) Thurgood Marshall Airport, the Express Metro Bus takes you directly to the Greenbelt metrorail station. From there take the train toward the Branch Avenue station. Both the Amtrak and MARC trains go to the Union Station metro stop on the red line. BWI also offers a Super Shuttle point to point bus service, a reserved shuttle service. By the way, in our experience BWI is the least expensive of the 3 airports.
  • Amtrak trains have stops at both the Union Station (red line) and New Carrollton (orange line) metrorail stations. From Union Station, take the train toward Shady Grove. New Carrollton is at the end of the line, so your only option is the train toward Vienna.
